• The Foundation for Early Learning was established in April 2000 to build on the work of the Governor's Commission on Early Learning, which was convened by Washington Governor Gary Locke in 1998. The Commission was co-chaired by First Lady Mona Locke and Melinda French Gates who wrote, in the Commission's Final Report, "We have seen the magic of early learning in our own infants and toddlers. It is critically important to nurture children's confidence and encourage them to explore and learn." Their eloquent statement is part of the important legacy of the Commission's work and is clearly reflected in the Foundation's mission — to support the profound learning children experience from birth through age five.
